Released on March 23, 1942, Broadway starring George Raft, Pat O’Brien, Broderick Crawford and a very charming Janet Blair, was a hit with audiences during World War II thanks in part to an extensive use of music from the 1920’s, a good plot and terrific dance scenes. George was a dancer before becoming an actor and this film showcased his talents.
George holds the record in Hollywood for playing himself in movies and on TV, and this semi-autobiographical film in which he played “George Raft” was one of those times. He certainly led a colorful life and Broadway took some of its plot from that as well as the exciting times of the “Roaring Twenties”.
Janet was thrilled to be cast opposite George, one of the top dancers of the day, and to play his partner, a role for which she was well-suited. In fact, Broadway essentially established her career.
Broadway is hard to find but the best dance with George and Janet is available as a video on YouTube as well as below. The close embrace and beautiful hand movements are sexy even today. There is more info about this film in a post from last year.
If you find a site where Broadway can be purchased or streamed, please post the location in the comments. Thank you.
