Invisible Stripes, released on December 30, 1939, was not the most successful film with George and Bogart. That honor belongs to They Drive by Night (1940). However, Invisible Stripes provides a telling glimpse into the life of an ex-con prior to World War II. George was never incarcerated but he was acquainted with that world from listening to the experiences of people who knew all too well what it was like. It imbued his portrayal of the lead character with authenticity and an overarching likelihood that things could never end well. You can read more about it in a post from 2022 that also has some photos and a terrific poster from the film.
A few months ago, a couple of shorts set to music by George’s friend Frank Sinatra, were posted to YouTube. They total less than a minute but are very watchable for any George Raft fan.
