George Raft and Alison Skipworth appeared in four films together, the first of which was the crime comedy Madame Racketeer, released on July 23, 1932.
Madame Racketeer, in part based on the life of a real woman, the actors play charming con artists who form a tenuous alliance. Will they “play” each other or “play” their marks or both?
George was third billed and though it was shot before Scarface was released, it is evident that Paramount thought he had the potential to be a real star and signed him to a long term contract. It was a gamble for the studio that paid well.
Skipworth’s film career began with a short in 1912 and ended with a starring role in a 1938 feature after amassing 55 credits in that twenty-six years. She held her own opposite W.C. Fields in four films and that is something worthy of note.
