Intrigue was released on October 15, 1947, and starred George Raft, June Havoc, and Helena Carter. It is a film-noir and the first film from George’s company, Star Films. Sam Bischoff and George were the producers while Edwin Marin was the director.
The plot revolves around dangerous situations and even more dangerous people encountered by a good man caught up in smuggling goods for the black market in Shanghai following World War II.
George and the rest of the cast turned in solid performances with The Los Angeles Times calling it “an intense melodrama which offers George Raft one of his best roles.” However, the original plot had been altered to appease a Chinese council which turned it into a less exciting and interesting movie, and it was not the success it could have been.
Helena Carter was 23 when Intrigue was filmed and had this to say about her co-star. “My mother warned me to be careful of George Raft, but her fears proved groundless. This was my first leading role and naturally I was very nervous. George Raft was a true gentleman and could not have been nicer.”
Intrigue is another solid entry for George in the film-noir genre. Many of his films have been lost to contemporary audiences, but you can view dozens of them from the movies section of this site.
